Acommplishments for 2006
What we accomplished in 2006:
- Successful meetings with the City Manager to address issues and concerns
of the various property owner associations.
- Successful launching and funding of the Telemedicine Clinic at Jamaica Beach.
- Facilitated candidate forums and debates throughout the year.
- Continued working with GARM in establishing programs for rental homes.
- Appointed to the Comprehensive Plan Steering Committee to update the existing
Plan.
- Successfully defeated the 16 story condo project at Eckerd Lane in Lafittes
Cove.
- Participated on the Parks Board of Trustees Seaweed Committee on the best
methods to rake and handle seaweed. Also, the WGIPOA is involved in funding
a study by TAMUG on seaweed positive or negative impacts to the beach
- Successful Hurricane Preparedness and Planning meeting with Jamaica Beach.
- The WGIPOA was very instrumental in securing funding for the Trust for Public
Land’s acquisition of McAllis Point on the west end. Through the efforts of
Sidney McClendon, he took the TPL to Austin to meet the GLO Commissioner and
a method to purchase the land was worked out.
- Worked with property owner associations in submitting project goal summary’s
for the Coastal Impact Assistance Program (CIAP) funding for the State’s portion
(65%) and the County’s portion (35%). West end participants were selected
and are going through the review process, particularly the West Galveston
Comprehensive Shoreline and Habitat Restoration Project.
- Coordinated efforts of property owner associations and the GLO in going
after FEMA hazardous mitigation grants.
- Successful meetings on appraisal and tax caps on real property with the
County Tax Collector/Accessor.
- Member of the West Galveston Island Green Printing and Coordinating Committee
through the Trust for Public Land (TPL).
- Worked with the GLO, City, and County and affected property owner associations
on FEMA reimbursement from the destruction of CEPRA II projects caused by
Hurricane Rita.
- The WGIPOA has for years recommended to the GLO to follow the Attorney General’s
decision in 1999 in regard to "houses on the beach" and that was
to allow them to stay, be repaired, and hook up to services if the house did
not block the public’s access to the beach and if the house was not a health
hazard. The GLO Commissioner made this ruling when the 2 year moratorium was
lifted on June 6.
- The WGIPOA facilitated two meetings about houses on the beach. One with
the GLO and one with the Pacific Legal Foundation, both were well attended
with over 100 people.
- Organized meetings with property owner associations and the City to address
beach access issues and drainage issues, particularly Karankawa and Sunny
Beach areas.
- Obtained six new corporate sponsors and two new property owner associations
joined the WGIPOA.
- Secured a Fish America Foundation grant of $50,000 for the Isla del Sol
marsh restoration project.
