Attention: Members and Friends of the West Galveston Island Property Owners Association
Each year for the past 20 years the City of Jamaica Beach and the West Galveston Island Property Owners Association had a joint “Hurricane Preparedness and Recovery” meeting at the Jamaica Beach public building. This year the meeting was scheduled on June 20 but due to the coronavirus pandemic we decided to cancel it and to do a virtual meeting on a video conferencing platform, utilizing “Zoom” technology.
NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center is forecasting for 2020 a likely range of 13 to 19 named storms (winds of 39 mph or higher), of which 6 to 10 could become hurricanes (winds of 74 mph or higher), including 3 to 6 major hurricanes (category 3, 4 or 5; with winds of 111 mph or higher). Hurricane season starts June 1 and ends November 30 and so far we already had three storms, 2 in May and 1 the beginning of June, so we need to be prepared.
For the meeting we have three prominent and well known weather people with years of experience, who you will enjoy listening too and learning. The three are Bill Read, Lew Fincher, and Dan Reilly (see attached bio for each).
The format of the meeting will be as follows:
- Welcome – Mayor Steve Spicer of Jamaica Beach
- Welcome – Mayor ProTem Dr. Craig Brown of Galveston
- Hurricane Season 2020 outlook and basic preparedness message – Bill Read
- The history and current threat of storm surge for Galveston Island – Lew Fincher
- Hazards and National Weather Service operations for Hurricane threats – Dan Reilly
The West Galveston Island Property Owners Association and the City of Jamaica Beach are inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting.
